The University of Vienna was founded by Duke Rudolph IV in 1365. It is the oldest university in the German-speaking world and one of the largest in Central Europe.

With approximately 6,700 academic staff, the University of Vienna is the largest teaching and research institution in Austria. Currently, there are about 88,000 students enrolled at the University of Vienna. 188 courses can be taken, of which 56 are Bachelor-, 117 Master-, 4 Diploma- and 11 PhD-Programmes. It aims to sustain a wide range of studies, but at the same time to promote new and innovative fields of research, and to establish new networks between subjects.

The main task and goal of this university lies in creating and sustaining top-quality research and teaching, which are regarded as one inseparable entity.

The Research Group Knowledge Engineering aims to set its focal point in research on “Knowledge-Based Process Management” and accomplishes research results in the areas of Meta Modelling, Metadata and Ontologies, Business Process Management and Business Intelligence. For fostering the content-wise exchange of results and to advance technological progress in the Method Engineering Community, the research group established the Open Models Initiative, www.openmethods.at. By providing sound know-how, by the exploitation of contemporary research results plus their continued enhancement, the Open Models Initiative ensures a lasting impact in the community.
