Objective 1: Secure Collaboration via a Dynamic and De-centralised Access to Information

The objective is to develop a method and architecture for securely sharing information in a virtual factory and to demonstrate how the necessary technologies can be applied jointly in industrial environments. This method needs to fulfil the following key requirements: Collaboration throughout a complex partner network and the frequent need for ad-hoc set-ups of information exchange require a de-centralised access management. Any member of ComVantage – within the range of his or her responsibilities – shall be able to access information, access contacts in a collaborative space, as well as provide access to members according to the business processes. To ensure that information remains private to authorised members only, a sophisticated dynamic access control model needs to be defined that reflects most complex combinations of company-based and user-role based rights for access control. Moreover, the method of sharing information shall be easily applicable to SMEs as well as to large enterprises.

Objective 2: Easy to Handle and Trustful Collaboration Apps for Mobile Interaction

The objective is to define a novel way of building mobile applications that enables to connect data from different business partners, and combine specific extracts that are relevant for a user in a certain situation. This requires the following key features: An innovative visualisation concept needs to be defined that is able to present externally evolving data not known at design time. At the same time the concept must still be intuitive and intelligible to support decision making in organisationally complex set-ups. Furthermore, interaction strategies need to reflect the workflow based on dynamic business processes. To support easy to handle collaboration apps the interaction design needs to address usability and user experience. The applications shall also provide confidence and trust in the collaboration. Palpable control mechanisms will be defined that reflect the various levels of criticality of data exchange. Last but not least, the concept needs to be suitable for different situations of usage in the industrial environment.

Objective 3: Collaboration Apps with Verified Added-Value

The objective is to specify an evaluation approach for verifying the competitive benefits of using a collaboration space. To meet this objective, the project will include the elaboration of a conceptual framework and a broad metric set to fully capture the impact of implementing the ComVantage approach, including the aspects of increased efficiency, cost reduction, decreased carbon-footprint, and increased flexibility. The developed framework will be validated through various methodologies, including a process simulation, usability testing, and the analysis of objective and subjective data collected from the system and its various users. The multiplicity will be endorsed by selected diverse use cases. To give consideration to the different usage situations the framework and the metrics will be interwoven with the dynamic workflow models. The evaluation approach shall be integrable to business process modelling tools, in order to support decision making on the creation and modification of business processes.
